Eating The Rainbow

I recently had the opportunity to visit my nephew's Pre-K class to talk to them about "Eating the Rainbow". I was excited to try something new, bond with Myles and touch on something with these kids that I was passionate about, even if on an introductory level.

Let's be real, these kids are 4-5 years old so I knew I had to keep it somewhat entertaining but also keep it simple, even if I did want to teach them ALL the things!

I made it an event and took Myles to the grocery store to prepare. I had him go through each color of the rainbow and let him choose a fruit and veggie in each color (which I also supplemented to give the kids more variety to see). He loved the ability to make the choices! He even asked me what "organic" meant when I happened to mention it in passing!

The day of, I brought a full array of colorful fruits and veggies, we laid it out on the table together, and I asked the class "Have you ever heard of eating the rainbow?". Our lesson went from there, asking them to name the colors, volunteer their own ideas for fruits and veg in each color, asked what they liked to eat. I touched on each color's superpower--why each color was important for different parts of their bodies--and had them choose their fave rainbow color and draw a fruit or veggie of that color. We finished with a little "homework" - try and get as many colors on their plate that night as possible. I received photos of Myles trying it at home all weekend which made it all worth it.

As a side note, big kudos and thanks to all those teachers out there doing this day in and day out for our kids. Keeping 28 pre-K kids engaged is a huge feat - I literally sweat a little bit!

If you don't already, this was a fun reminder to try and get your kids involved at the grocery store if you have time, and maybe even in the kitchen. They really pick up so much and love being a part of it with you.
