Goal-setting vs. the Power of Intentions

A new year always brings about the idea of starting fresh and setting goals. We all think about what we want to focus on in the new year and what we want to accomplish, whether it’s personal or professional. We also have different ways of approaching the process: some people have it in the back of their mind, some need to write it down, some people need to speak it into the universe so someone other than themselves hears it.

Though the idea of setting goals and intentions are often spoken within the same breath, there are slight nuances that make them stand alone.

Goal-setting

Goal-setting is a valuable practice when you want to get things done, complete a task, check projects off a list, etc. On the other hand, goals can also give a feeling of lack, like what you have or are isn’t enough and you’re constantly striving to reach that ‘goal’ for the ‘right’ or ‘perfect’ life, body, career, success, fill-in-the-blank. Goals focus on the future.

The Power of Intentions

Intentions, however, offer a different perspective and are a bit more internal, using emotions and feelings. Intentions focus on the present and what you have and are now, your relationship with yourself and perhaps with others. It’s how you show up in the present.

For some, setting intentions may sound a bit woo-woo but using the practice in conjunction with working on and committing to your goals can make you unstoppable because it ties in to your values and what’s truly important to you. Setting intentions sets the foundation for achieving your goals.

Some tips if you want to be thoughtful about this in the weeks and months ahead:

  1. Write them down

  2. Be specific and clear

  3. Say it out loud (even if no one is around to hear it)

  4. Keep them positive

  5. Use them to shift any negative or limiting beliefs you have about yourself

  6. Use words like “I will” or “I am”

The exercise can be an empowering way to start the new year! Enjoy it.
