Travel Hacks to Keep You Feeling Your Best
With a long weekend upon us, many people take this opportunity to travel—especially with winter break in full swing for many schools. But if you’ve set goals for the new year, the last thing you want is to derail your progress before you even reach your destination.
I intentionally take a pretty balanced approach to travel. I’m there to enjoy the experience—the food, the people, the adventure—but that doesn’t mean I completely abandon the habits that make me feel my best.
The goal? Arrive feeling refreshed, not drained. Here’s how I set myself up while en route:
1. Hydration is Non-Negotiable
Air travel is dehydrating, and skipping water to avoid bathroom trips is a mistake.
I always buy the largest bottle of water post-security and add an electrolyte packet for extra hydration.
If possible, choose an aisle seat so you don’t have to stress about getting up. (But if you’re traveling with friends or family, who cares—just hydrate!)
Fun fact & TMI: I always have to pee more often when I’m in transit. It’s like my body just knows it’s inconvenient. 😆
2. Skip the In-Flight Drinks (For Now)
If you drink alcohol, consider waiting until you land. Alcohol dehydrates you, even more so, and can trigger a domino effect of choices that might not be the best before you even check in to your destination.
If you want to indulge, make that first cocktail or glass of wine part of your arrival experience instead of your flight routine.
Same goes with the beverage cart. I avoid the offerings since it’s mostly sugar/fake sugar and just get more water, sometimes a green tea though that hot water never tastes good and who knows the last time they cleaned or flushed those airplane lines!
3. Be Smart About Snacks
Airport snacks are usually high in refined carbs and sugar, leaving you hungry and sluggish. (And for me, usually bloated!)
Stick to snacks with protein and fiber to keep you fuller longer—think nuts, jerky, trail mix or Greek yogurt and fruit.
This way, you actually enjoy your first meal at your destination instead of feeling like you need to eat the second you land.
4. Mindset Matters
Travel can be stressful (especially with kids in tow), but it’s also an opportunity to embrace new experiences.
A little planning ahead means you get to enjoy your trip without feeling like you need a vacation from your vacation.
Bottom Line: You don’t have to be “all or nothing” when you travel (or ever for that matter!). Prioritize feeling good so you can make the most of your trip—without sacrificing fun.
